What your BMI does — and doesn't — tell you

BMI (body mass index) compares your weight to your height to place you in a broad band: underweight, healthy, overweight or obese. It's a useful quick screen across a population, but it's blunt for any one person — it can't tell muscle from fat, and it ignores build, age and where you carry weight. A muscular athlete and someone carrying excess fat can share the same BMI. Treat it as one signal among several, alongside your waist measurement and how you actually feel.
